Recorder Fingering Chart

Soprano/descant recorder β€” Baroque fingering, notes C to high C. Print and pin up in your classroom.

How to read the chart

Each diagram shows the seven front holes (top to bottom) plus the thumb hole (T) on the back. ● means cover the hole; β—‹ means leave it open. Left thumb always covers the back hole unless shown open. Blow gently with a warm, steady breath β€” say β€œtoo” rather than β€œhoo” for a clear tone.

Teaching tips

  • Start with B, A, G β€” the first three notes most method books introduce.
  • Practise tonguing: whisper β€œtoo, too, too” with the tongue touching behind the top teeth.
  • Keep fingers relaxed and curved; cover holes with the finger pads, not the tips.
  • Check the thumb hole is fully sealed β€” a leaky thumb is the most common cause of squeaks.
