The 6 Elements of Music

NSW HSC Music reference β€” using the terminology of the 2025 Music 1, 2 & Extension syllabuses (first HSC exam 2028).

New syllabus terminology

The 2025 syllabus replaces the old "6 Concepts of Music" with the 6 Elements of Music, organised through two lenses: Music context (social, cultural, historical) and Music language (the elements below). "Tone Colour" is now Timbre & Performing Media; "Dynamics and Expressive Techniques" is now Dynamics & Expression.

Music context & Music language

The 2025 syllabus asks students to analyse music through two interconnected lenses:

Music context

The social, cultural, historical and stylistic settings in which music is created and performed β€” who made it, why, for whom, and in what tradition.

Music language

The six elements above β€” the building blocks students use to describe, analyse and create music. This replaces the old "concepts of music" framing.

Teaching the 2009 syllabus this year?

The 2009 syllabus (still examined through 2027) uses "Concepts of Music" with "Tone Colour" and "Dynamics and Expressive Techniques". The elements map directly: Timbre & Performing Media = Tone Colour; Dynamics & Expression = Dynamics and Expressive Techniques. The other four are unchanged.
